KTMMOB Chamber of Architects Space Narrative Text Competition, 2022

The Purpose of the Competition:

Architecture and literature, visually the essence of one of the other textual considering that interest may not be easy at first glance to establish between these two disciplines. However, the only place we can turn to in order to get information about many architectural works that are now living quietly with us or have somehow succumbed to time and disappeared are written sources. Cities and buildings that do not exist today, all kinds of literary products written at that time (diaries, travelogues, biographies, essays, official documents, letters, etc.).) thanks to which it was introduced into the history and culture of architecture. Today, in fact, we need such resources very much. As members of the Editorial Board of the Chamber of Architects, we also wanted to draw attention to the different written sources with which the disciplines of architecture and literature are associated, as well as the deep values they contain, in addition to academic theses and articles.

With this idea, the KTMMOB aims to contribute to the field of architecture and literature through the Chamber of Architects and MIMARCA magazine through the competition.

Competition Coverage:

The competition is open to all graduates of the relevant departments, members of KTMMOB and any of the professional organizations affiliated to TMMOB.

The Subject of The Competition:

Participants are expected to write a text describing all the values of a place and the potential it carries by addressing a place. This space can exist in different scales, anywhere in the world, or it can be a figment of imagination.

In Texts:

– depiction of a place,

– user-space relationship,

– spatial transformations,

– social change-how transformations affect space and/ or spatial changes affect society,

it is expected that one or more of these topics will be mentioned.

The way an architectural space is represented and interpreted in the text; how the discipline of architecture takes its place in literature and what architecture adds to the writing as the main means of representation of the written work will be taken into account during the evaluation.

We invite those who are eager to write to contribute to the architecture/literature Decoupling through the creative writing exercise by combining the “structural” fiction of literature and the “narrative” power of architecture.
